About PortaBote
After a very successful career in publishing, Porta-Bote's CEO Sandy Kaye bought the rights of the folding boat design in 1973 and has driven the business by redesigning the boat to be more efficient, introducing new accessories and much more. The Porta-Bote design was actually created in 1969 by Sandy's friend. The original concept was a good one, but unfortunately the first design didn't interest many sailing enthusiasts. A little re-engineering by the man himself and the Porta-Bote had the right design and features to earn worldwide sales.
The Porta-Bote was born in 1969 after years of planning the concept of a portable folding boat. It took several years until the overall hull design met the paper concept. The original boat was a double ended boat with no bow and stern, just two bows. With this design the folding boat didn't have such stability as there was not enough surface area to support the boat. When Sandy joined the business, he immediately made a redesign and reengineering in the boat's hull, adding a bow and a stern to the Porta-Bote. The new portable boat had wider beam in order to guarantee its stability and had also the ability to mount an electric or gas powered motor, turning it to a multi-purpose boat that can function as a fishing boat, sailing boat, motor boat and row boat all in one.
